There is ve there are nasıl kullanılır?
There is ve there are, bir şeyin var olduğunu ya da bir yerde bulunduğunu ilk kez söylerken kullanılır: There is a bank near here. → “Buraya yakın bir banka var.” Fiil, arkasından gelen isme uyar: tekil ve sayılamayan isimle there is (kısaltması there’s), çoğul isimle there are: There are two parks in our neighborhood. → “Mahallemizde iki park var.”
Nasıl kurulur?
| Yapı | Örnek |
|---|---|
| Olumlu, tekil: there is / there’s + tekil isim | There’s a pharmacy on the corner. |
| Olumlu, sayılamayan: there is + isim | There is some milk in the fridge. |
| Olumlu, çoğul: there are + çoğul isim | There are three hotels in the town. |
| Olumsuz: there isn’t / there aren’t + any | There isn’t any bread. / There aren’t any chairs. |
| Olumsuz: there is no / there are no | There is no bread. / There are no chairs. |
| Soru: is there / are there | Is there any coffee? / Are there any questions? |
| Geçmiş: there was / there were | There was a storm last night. / There were many people at the concert. |
- There cümlenin öznesi değildir; asıl özne fiilden sonra gelen isimdir ve fiil ona göre tekil ya da çoğul olur: There is a problem. / There are several problems.
- There is no, there isn’t any sözünden daha vurguludur.
- Be fiilinin başka biçimleriyle de kullanılır: Has there been any news?
It değil there
Bir şeyin varlığından ilk kez söz ederken it is ya da they are değil, there is / there are kullanılır. İngilizcede emir cümleleri dışında her cümlenin bir öznesi olmalıdır; burada there “boş özne” görevi görür:
- There’s a message for you. (“It’s a message for you” bu anlamda değil)
- There are two coffee shops on this street. (“They are two coffee shops” değil)
Söz edilen şeye sonradan it ya da they ile dönülür: There’s a new bakery downtown. It opens at seven.
There’s ile çoğul isim
Konuşmada ve bazı gündelik yazılarda çoğul isimle de there’s duyulur: “There’s two cars outside.” Cambridge Dictionary bunun resmî yazıda ve sınavlarda yanlış sayılabileceğini belirtir; yazıda there are kullanılır: There are two cars outside.
There is mi, have mi?
Türkçedeki “var” hem varlığı hem sahip olmayı anlatır; İngilizcede sahip olmak have ile söylenir: “Bir kardeşim var.” → I have a brother. / “Arabanız var mı?” → Do you have a car? Bir yerde bir şeyin bulunması ise there is ile söylenir: “Bahçede bir kedi var.” → There’s a cat in the yard.

Türkçedeki en yakın karşılığı
Türkçedeki en yakın karşılığı “var” ve “yok” sözleridir: “Masada bir mektup var.” → There is a letter on the table. / “Evde ekmek yok.” → There isn’t any bread at home. İki dilin ayrıldığı yerler:
- Türkçede yer çoğunlukla cümlenin başındadır (“Masada bir mektup var.”); İngilizcede yer genellikle sona gelir: There is a letter on the table.
- “Var” ve “yok” tekil-çoğul ayrımı yapmaz; İngilizcede fiil isme göre değişir: “Bir sorun var.” → There is a problem. / “Üç sorun var.” → There are three problems.
- “Var mı?” İngilizcede Is there …? ya da Are there …? olur; “Yakında bir eczane var mı?” → Is there a pharmacy nearby?
- Sahip olma anlamındaki “var” there is ile değil, have ile çevrilir: “Vaktim var.” → I have time.
